BS7671 IEE wiring regulations go green in 2012
24/10/2011Known by many as the 'red book', the 17th edition wiring regulations changed colour in 2010 but will not come into force until 2012. A number of changes made to the BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations – entitled 'Amendments No.1 2011' - has prompted a reprint of the 17th edition, in green.
So, what are the amendments to the BS7671 IEE wiring regulations? They include the addition of a number of new sections:
Section 444 – Measures against electromagnetic disturbances. Equipment that can cause an electromagnetic change, such as fluorescent lighting, lifts and transformers, are subject to this amendment, and it is recommended that such equipment is not situated near IT equipment.
Section 534 – Devices for protection against over-voltage. A selection of surge protection devices (SPD) are required for surge protection in sensitive equipment such as computers.
Section 710 – Medical locations. This puts heavier emphasis on ensuring the safety of medical equipment – including life support machines and operating theatres – and those that come into contact with such equipment.
Section 729 – Operating or maintenance gangways. This section requires that adequate safety measures be taken into account in maintenance areas.
These new measures will also form part of the replacement for the Periodic Inspection Report (PIR). Appendix 6 New model forms for certification and reporting covers the new Electrical Installation condition Report (EICR), which supersedes the Periodic Inspection Report (PIR).
These new changes are due to come into effect from January 2012. Please look out for further news about the upcoming changes as we approach the new year.
